The Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex is a large recreational and learning facility with an approximate area of 300,000 square feet which encompasses a variety of areas such as track & field, gymnasiums, competition and leisure swimming pools, fitness areas, classrooms, offices, snack bar, kitchen, locker rooms, other common areas, and outdoor stadium.
Due to the maintenance issues including the continuing leakage from the competition swimming pool and the deformation of an existing wall at this pool, an investigation of the existing conditions and remedial design services were performed. Structural engineering services consisting of the investigation of the existing conditions, preparation of structural report and construction document were provided.
The scope of structural engineering services included the site investigation of the existing conditions related to the competition pool leakage and the deflection of the pool wall at the deep end of the pool, review of the available existing facility structural and related drawings and the swimming pool drawings, coordination with the civil engineer related to the site dewatering, coordination with the geotechnical engineer related to the performance of soils boring testing around the pool perimeter and review of the geotechnical report, performance of structural analysis and preparation of structural calculations related to the competition pool swimming walls based on the geotechnical report recommendations, preparation of structural report, preparation of construction documents showing the corrective measures for the swimming pool walls and other maintenance items including the recommended repairs at the leaking and deteriorated pool expansion joints. Preparation of construction documents for the corrective measures related to the deflection of the pool wall and placement of the roof mounted dehumidification units for the competition and leisure pools.
