Randall Farm Greenhouse

Discipline:

MEP & Structural Engineering

Upper Marlboro, Maryland

Square Footage:

25,000 sq. ft.

Peppermill

The project included an administration building, head house, green house and pump building with a total area of approximately 25,000 square feet. The mechanical, electrical, plumbing and structural engineering services for the design and construction phases of the project were provided:

  • The HVAC system for the administration building consisted of two high efficiency gas fired spilt air conditioning units serving the offices, multipurpose room, lunchroom, bathrooms and hallways. The heating system for the head house and greenhouse consisted of gas fired unit heaters. The wall and roof panels of the greenhouse were automatically controlled providing ventilation air in conjunction with the fans located throughout the greenhouse.

  • Rainwater reclaims system was included in the project. The rainwater was directed to two 6,000 gallons underground interceptor tanks and two 6,000 gallons underground storage tanks and into the pump house where the pump/filtration and heating equipment were located.  The rainwater reclaim system provides irrigation water in the  greenhouse.

  • The new electric service was extended from the new pad mounted transformer to the electric room located in the administration building.  Feeders from the electric room were extended to the electrical panels in the head house and the pump house. The electric power requirements for the equipment were coordinated with the greenhouse vendor and control contractor.

  • The Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) approval of the plumbing drawings including the information related to the water reclaim  system was contingent upon approval of the health department. However, the health department comments indicated that the approval of the department of environment is required for obtaining their approval. F&H engineers met with the officials of the department of environment and addressed the health department comments  and communicated with officials and reviewers at the department of health and WSSC which resulted in obtaining the required plumbing permit for this  project.

  • The project also included the design and construction phases for the structural system of the administration building and the foundation for the greenhouse building.
