Shed

The Electric Shed located at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex is a standalone structure which houses the main electrical equipment (including main switchgear, transformer, and electrical panels) serving the track lighting and supporting buildings.  The wooden envelope of the shed had deteriorated and needed to be replaced.  Due to the presence of the electrical equipment in the shed, which needed to be protected from the environmental elements and required continuous operation of the equipment throughout the demotion and construction phases of the project, the secondary envelope was designed to enclosed the original electric shed. Generally, the following engineering services were performed:

  • Review of the existing structural and electrical drawings in conjunction with the information obtained during our site visit for the replacement/addition of the shed.

  • Provided structural, electrical, and mechanical engineering services for replacement of the existing building envelope and expansion of the existing shed housing electrical switchboard and other electrical equipment. The structural drawings showed foundations for the new shed exterior walls, roof, and structural details to accommodate the existing electrical duct bank through the new footings. The electrical drawings showed the electric related items affected by the shed replacement and expansion including the relocation of the existing outdoor emergency generator. The mechanical drawings showed the heating and ventilation system for new expanded electric shed.

  • Coordination with Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO) was performed concerning the existing underground electric ductwork. The construction work was performed in phases in order to maintain the existing electrical in operation throughout the construction. Construction phase services including site visits, review of shop drawings submittals, responses to the contractor questions and were performed.
