Performance of structural engineering services for the replacement of fourteen (14) rooftop mechanical air conditioning units supported on roof mounted curbs and steel platforms at the Prince George’s (Bowie Baysox) Stadium which is a multipurpose sports venue and is primarily used for baseball.
The existing facility which has been constructed during the mid-1990’s consists of a multi-level steel framed structure with load bearing masonry walls at certain locations. The existing roof framing system includes steel joists and beams with corrugated metal decking. The existing roofing consists of a ballasted system.
The rooftop mechanical air conditioning units are located on the high and low roofs. The existing units are supported on roof mounted prefabricated curbs.
The scope of work included the performance of field visits for visual observation of the existing conditions, review of the new replacement rooftop unit weights and information, review of the applicable portions of the existing structure based on the original drawings, evaluation of the existing roof framing structural capacity for the support of the new roof top units, and preparation of the construction documents showing the supporting conditions and details for the addition of the new replacement rooftop units.
Based on the existing conditions requirements, the new roof top units were designed to be supported on roof mounted prefabricated curbs or steel platforms. The supporting details for the new roof top units, including the reinforcement of the existing steel joists at required locations, were included in the construction documents.
